Curt Parker Jewelers has joined American Express, United Airlines and Merrill Lynch, among other major U.S. corporations, in marketing specifically to gay and lesbian consumers.

The jewelry industry has historically ignored gay consumers and those who feel the traditional marriage certificate is not for them, said Curt Parker, owner. We not only have jewelry that appeals to a gay clientele, but we also want these consumers to know we are serious about seeking their business, he added.

Calling gays and lesbians a forgotten market, Parker added that their education, affluence and influence make for great potential clients and a wonderful way to expand our market share.

Gay and lesbian couples can now find the Orbit Design Studio Collection of fashion rings from Frederick Goldman Inc. at Curt Parker Jewelers. And as a custom jeweler, we can create anything a client might desire, Parker added.

Goldman plans to advertise the Orbit line in the national gay magazine OUT and in regional editions of bridal magazines to attract the modern bride looking for a more avant-garde wedding band. In conjunction, Curt Parker Jewelers is running a campaign of print ads in The St. Louis Riverfront Times, an alternative weekly newspaper that reaches more than 250,000 young, urban adults, to promote the line.

Curt Parker added, Today we need to use niche branding to attract new customers. Most older and affluent customers have their family jewelers. It’s almost impossible to get a new customer into your store who is happy at another jeweler. Therefore we need to target the younger market and the forgotten customer.
