Companies Target Destination Wedding & Honeymoon Market |
|
March 18, 2004 By: Joanne Farrow Companies Target Destination Wedding & Honeymoon MarketDespite the slow recovery of the tourism business, there is one sector of the population that is still hitting the road in record numbers: Engaged couples, newlyweds, and their families. That’s because the destination-wedding trend — marrying away from home — has only gotten stronger in recent years. GetawayWeddings.com — a web site devoted to destination weddings, vow renewals, honeymoons, and romantic vacations — recently conducted a poll regarding this phenomenon. What we found was amazing: 92% of engaged couples have decided not to change their travel plans regarding their destination weddings and honeymoons. That’s great news for airlines and resorts that cater to those in love. And, as hoteliers scramble to win back business, the current economic climate is a boon to couples that may now snare terrific travel deals for their next romantic rendezvous. We’ve all re-evaluated our priorities, says Andrea Rotondo Hospidor, editorial director of GetawayWeddings.com and author of I’m Getting Married. Now What?! Couples are now concentrating on the meaning of marriage. Brides and grooms want the beauty of their love not only reflected in their vows, but also in the choice of location for their special day. That’s why so many are considering marrying away from home, be it atop a snow-capped mountain peak or on a white sand beach. Resorts around the globe have long realized what a powerful market romance travel is. Now they are examining the destination-wedding concept. Wyndham has taken this concept so seriously, they recently launched the Destination Weddings By Wyndham division. With more and more couples choosing to combine the wedding and honeymoon by celebrating their nuptials in a vacation spot, Wyndham recognized the need to provide brides and grooms with a comprehensive guide to planning an innovative destination wedding, said David Riley, vice president of catering and convention services, for Wyndham International. Even seemingly unrelated industries are tapping this market. Orlando Harley-Davidson recently unveiled their new wedding program. That’s right, the bride can vroom up the aisle on a Harley as her groom waits at the altar with his hog by his side. The trend is for couples to do weddings that are a reflection of themselves, said Rebecca Grinnals, a wedding consultant and owner of Engaging Concepts, who has developed several wedding packages for Orlando Harley. Still, many couples prefer an island wedding or honeymoon and now they can even consult a magazine devoted to the topic. Island Weddings & Honeymoons is a quarterly publication that’s packed with advice, articles, and gorgeous photography. According to editor Annette Burden, the magazine promises to help couples determine the right island for their destination wedding and/or honeymoon.
