Cyberbrides use ‘net to stop scams |
|
April 21, 2004 By: Amy Hauser Cyberbrides use ‘net to stop scamsHere's comes the bride, a victim of scams and rip-offs? Yes, say consumer advocates Denise & Alan Fields. The Fields estimate one out of every three couples who will walk down the aisle this year will also get a trip to the cleaners. Commons scams include: • Bridal dress shops that gouge consumers with sky-high prices for gowns, accessories and alterations---marking items 500% over wholesale, ripping out tags to prevent comparison shopping and more. • Reception sites that raise the prices for food and liquor when they hear the word wedding. • Photographers who promise expert pictures, only to assign the wedding to an inexperienced stringer with a cheap 35mm camera. How can the 2.4 million couples that will say I Do in 2000 avoid rip-offs? The net, say the Fields. Couples can not only slash their bridal bills online but also avoid scamsters by using the web to research their wedding.
